The Bishops school community has raised more than R230 000 through a 24-hour cyclethon to support the Vusa Rugby and Learning Academy, in Langa, in honour of Youth Day.
More than 80 people in up to six teams did shifts of indoor cycling, at the Mallet Centre, starting from 4pm on Tuesday June 15. They were still going at it at the time of this newspaper going to press on Wednesday, by which stage they had exceeded R230 000, but were due to finish at 4pm.
Bishops rugby players participated as well as old boys, including former Springboks Christian Stewart and Robbie Fleck and former England rugby player Stuart Abbott.
Vusa’s programme manager Makabongwe Kahla said his organisation appreciated the support they received from the Bishops community. “Giving back and supporting the youth of this country is what we should all be rallying behind,” he said.
Bishops principal Tony Reeler said he was impressed by his pupils’ willingness to get involved in a worthy activity, particularly as the boys had just completed their exams.
