A soloist extraordinaire is lined up for a listener-friendly, jazzy, fun and light Sunday afternoon concert at Christ Church Constantia, on March 6.
Prize-winning flautist Liesl Stoltz will perform with Victor Tichart (piano), Brydon Bolton (double bass) and Frank Mallows (drums) accompanying her.
The programme features popu- lar works and composers: Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano; Mike Mower’s Sonata Latino for Flute and Salsa Trio; and John Rutter’s Suite Antique.
Stoltz has won many prizes nationally and overseas, among them in the Timisoara International Flute Competition in Romania and the Frederich Kuhlau International Flute Competition in Germany. She was awarded first prize for best interpretation of work by Kuhlau.
She holds a doctorate in Music Performance.
In this concert she performs some of the most ebullient and delightful works for flute, in a lighter vein than usual.
Mower’s Sonata Latino is a contemporary Latin/jazz improvisation. His Rumbango is a mixture of rumba and tango rhythms, Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio is classical crossover chamber jazz in seven movements.
Suite Antique was written by John Rutter for flute, harpsichord and strings with six movements, ranging from a Bach-like aria to a jazz-influenced waltz. The composer’s own style comes forth most strongly in the final rondeau with its characteristically forward-driving rhythms and melodic lines.
Bolton is a musician, composer and educator. A regular at the National Arts Festival and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, he performs in many diverse styles, being equally at home on the concert stage or at outdoor festivals.
Frank Mallows was principal of the Beau Soleil Music Centre in Kenilworth for many years. He studied with two of the world’s leading mallet percussion specialists: Americans Robert van Sice (focusing on solo marimba), and Ed Saindon (contemporary jazz vibraphone techniques).
While studying at UCT, Victor Tichart won first prize in the Adcock-Ingram Music Competition. He has toured abroad as an accompanist and released four CDs. He performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been musical director of musical productions at Artscape and the Masque Theatre. He is ad-hoc pianist for the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and accompanist for the Cape Philharmonia Choir.
The concert, the latest in the highly successful monthly series at Christ Church Constantia (on the corner of Constantia Main and Parish roads), begins at 3pm.
