Hard work paid off for Sunningdale City’s under-12 A team as they rounded off a remarkable season, winning the Cape Town Tygerberg Football Association (CTTFA) league and knock-out championships in their division.
Going into the season, with seven under-11 players in their squad, they headed up their league after the first three games and never looked back.
The mix of under-11s and under-12s saw this team being the youngest in their league.
The team managed to get through to the mid-season mark before they lost their first game. Bouncing back from this defeat, they then went on a run of games, ending the season nine points clear of Hanover Park in second place and an incredible 15 points clear of third placed De Beers.
The team played 24 league games, losing only twice the entire season. They conceded the least number of goals and scored the second most goals in their league. They also went on to play their way into the Cup Final, beating De Beers 2-0 in an exciting game, played in Somerset West on Cup Final Day.
“Winning the double does not come easy, and this was a remarkable achievement for such a young team,” said coach Tony Ugolini, who along with Clint Davids, guided the youngsters throughout the season.
“We would love to repeat this in 2025 but know that there will be new challenges ahead,” he said.
The achievements of the team were recognised by the club at their prize giving day, as they were awarded the Team-of-the-Year award for 2024.
For now, the squad is on a well-deserved break, before regrouping in the new year to take up the challenge yet again.
