South African College Schools (SACS) are getting ready to take on Wynberg Boys’ at the Hawthornden sports field, in Wynberg, on Saturday, June 1.
With SACS and Wynberg going into the match wounded from defeats against Boland Landbou (27-40) and Paul Roos (25-50), respectively, this past weekend, the derby promises to be nothing short of exhilarating.
Last week, SACS were big winners when they handed Milnerton High School their first school’s league defeat with a commanding 59-19 scoreline, in front of an electrifying crowd, in Newlands.
Despite losing their last three encounters against Paul Roos, Boland Landbou and Rondebosch, coach Nic Groom will be head-strong in preparing a solid Wynberg first 15 this coming weekend.
The star-studded Wynberg consists of 10 players that have been selected for the provincial teams to participate at this year’s Craven Week, Academy Week and Grant Khomo Week’s under-18 and under-16 national rugby tournaments.
Wynberg started the season relatively strong, winning the opening match of the Wynberg Festival, as well as beating St Andrews and Kingswood College at the Bishops 175th Festival in March.
In their last encounter against SACS, last year in August, Wynberg were 36-14 victors.
Coach Max Bokoyi and the coaching staff at SACS will look to keep the winning groove flowing when they travel up to Wynberg, on June 1.
Rondebosch has at least 11 players selected to represent the provincial teams, next month. Rondebosch’s Alutha Wesi and company might cause problems when they visit Bishops on Saturday.
Bishops have a mountain of their own to climb after losing seven of their opening matches against Western Province rugby schools this season. The last time they tasted victory was over a 47-24 win against Dale College at the KES Easter rugby festival, in April.
In a season filled with wins and losses, one game stood out. Last year, Bishops beat the majority of the school’s they played against. But in August, in a hard-fought clash with spectators cheering loudly, Rondebosch beat them by just one point, 36-35.
Will history repeat itself or will Bishops get the better of Rondebosch? The rugby matches kick-off at 12.30pm.
