Pianist Nathan John will be performing his original music in a concert at the President Hotel, Bantry Bay, on Sunday November 29, at 6pm.

The 25-year-old Kenilworth resident will be supported by violin player Deidré Cicilie from Bloemfontein and soprano Fanele Mkhwanazi from KwaZuluNatal who is performing two songs with him, The other songs Mr John will be performing solo for the Nathan Trio Summer Event.

John, who works in sales and marketing at the President Hotel, composed the music during lockdown when he couldn’t work for five months.

He has self-produced his first album called Wait, which has eight original tracks.

John was first inspired to go into music by his brother, Joshua Arendse, when he was 12.

“My brother had a drum kit, he stopped playing the drums then moved to guitar and I played on his drums and we played and learnt more about music at the Cape Town School of Songwriting,” he said.

John also learn to play the piano for the first time at the age of 12 under the mentorship of music teacher, Trevor Park. He also took private piano lessons with Ingrid Gollum.

South Korean pianist, Yiruma, and the American alternative rock group, Green Day are among the artists he draws inspiration from.

John works full-time at the President Hotel but would like to follow a path to becoming a professional musician.

He performed in a charity concert at Nazareth House in Vredehoek in February and has been rehearsing with Cicilie and Mkhwanazi since the beginning of September at his home.

While he has been performing music on Facebook on Sundays, this concert will be an opportunity for him to play his music in front of a live audience.

“It was a goal to perform my music live. It will also be a return on the investment of the time spent composing this music,” he said.

All Covid-19 protocols will be followed for the concert.
