The Seven Steps Academy for the Deaf, in Zonnebloem, has officially opened a new art classroom.

The classroom, a converted 60m² shipping container, was donated by Breadline Africa, a non-profit organisation.

The school has 104 children, from pre-grade R to matric, and employs an oral-aural method of teaching.

“There was a major need to add a new classroom to the facility due to a shortage of space and new learners coming in,” said Marion Wagner, the director of Breadline Africa.

“The new classroom has been fitted with specialised charging sockets for hearing aids, acoustic panels and a visual fire alarm. All these components have been installed to create a conducive environment for the learners to enjoy a creative activity,” said Ms Wagner.

“Creating this functional space will support the school’s curriculum that will open up doors to a better future for these children.”

The school’s principal, Lee Aan Kannemeyer, said the new classroom would help to unlock the pupils’ creative potential.

The school was also raising money, she said, to set up a language enrichment centre for its preschool children.
