5 South African female artists on the rise

I have always struggled with the term "New artist" as I've often thought its an unfair label, artists spend years to perfect their craft, and that part of their journey is not publicised nor acknowledged enough. It is only when their careers take off do we show interest in their background. Every year we are introduced to artists whose talents exceed our expectations, with sound and artistic approach that sets them apart.
The South African music industry has exponentially grown and expanded its genre intake, accepting and allowing artists who 20 years ago wouldn't have sold a single song. As much as we are grateful for the inclusivity, we still have a long way to go, ensuring artists are fully compensated for their worth and can live off their art without worrying about selling millions of records.
With that being said, we have compiled a list of 5 South African female musicians who have been making strides in the music industry. We are proud to say we have noticed their presence.
Thando Zide
Singer and producer, Thando Zide is a Soweto born artist with an extensive music background, she began singing at an early age, paving her own way until she released her debut EP “ Umvulo”. Zide’s vocal range is unmatched, her deep tone is a healing gift.
Lizzy Lane
Known for her raw delivery, at only 19 - Lizzy has made a name for herself in the Cape Town Hip Hop scene. She has maintained a level of consistency that will surely groom and grow her career to new heights, With one EP and prominent collaborations under her belt, we cannot wait to see what 2025 has in store for Lizzy.
Lia Butler
Often compared to SZA and Erykah Badu, Lia Butler is an artist of her own accord, she is redefining Neo-Soul with influences from South African traditional music, such as Umbhaqanga. Lia is a breathe of fresh air and everything we have been waiting for to redirect and cause a dent in the music industry.
Giuliette Price
The Cape Town jazz scene is known for producing some of the best jazz artists and launching their careers to the world. Giuliette Price is the perfect example. Hailing from Johannesburg the city of gold, Price brings a new modern take on Jazz, with a powerful voice and captivating stage presence, she embodies a unique nature that allows her to stand out from the crowd.

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Zawadi Yamungu is a force to be reckoned with, Influenced by Princess Magogo and Busi Mhlongo, Zawadi’s musical talents promote African heritage, a healing sound that bares truth and ancestral connection.
