Woodstock artist Ledelle Moe launched her first solo exhibition, Fold, on Saturday October 1 at the SMAC Gallery at The Palms, 145 Sir Lowry Road, Woodstock. On the heels of returning from participating in the Congo Biennale in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, the head of the Sculpture Department at the University of Stellenbosch said the monumental sculpture represents the permanence of concrete and steel mixed with the fluidity and transience of a reclined human-like figure caught in what could be a temporary or permanent repose. In the neighbouring display area are pen drawings and notations that inspire the final form. In her workroom, the artist bent and welded steel rods to create a skeleton for the final sculpture. Once complete it was cut into modular sections that can be taken apart or assembled. The final stage is to cover the work with concrete handmade and collected from various places. This is then moulded and carved in the brief time allowed before setting. The exhibition closes on Saturday January 14, 2023.
