The Opera Singer, featuring South African actress Fiona Ramsay and British actor Owain Rhys Davies, is playing Baxter Studio Theatre until Saturday, February 7.
The Opera Singer is directed by Janna Ramos-Violante from Austria, who was originally born in Durban.
Presented by Tony Flack and Janna Ramos-Violante, the play is a poised and lyrical exploration of legacy, artistry, and connection, told through the eyes of an ambitious journalist portrayed by Flack and a lifelong opera devotee, played by Ramsay.
In the play, Davies’s journalist character seeks an interview with the opera singer, who is a writer conflicted by journalistic ethics and his desire to uncover the real person behind the diva.
Despite its searing insights, the play crackles with wit and a wry philosophy on the human condition.
The Opera Singer is currently on at the Baxter Theatre until Saturday, February 7. Tuesday to Saturday shows are at 8pm, while there is a 3pm matinee performance on Saturday as well. The play is 90 minutes long without an interval.
