The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will open this year’s Maynardville Open-Air Festival with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the music Mendelssohn wrote as a setting to the Shakespearian play.
The orchestra will perform at Maynardville Park in Wynberg on Thursday January 19, Friday January 20 and Saturday January 21, at 8.15pm.
They will be joined on stage by the women of Vox Cape Town, Woodland’s choir, and sopranos Lauren Pharaoh and Setsoane Jeannette Nseki, both UCT students, as well as John Woodland who will narrate sections from Shakespeare’s works.
The Maynardville Open-Air Festival, back after a three-year hiatus and running until Sunday March 5, includes performances by Cape Town Opera from Thursday January 26 until Sunday January 29; the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream from Thursday February 2 until Thursday February 23; and Cape Town City Ballet from Wednesday March 1 until Sunday March 5.
Tickets, which cost from R161, can be booked and picnics pre-ordered on Quicket, and patrons can also buy food and drink from the Maynardville evening food market.
