As South African hip hop continues to flourish and evolve, budding star Judas Stone - a name that enthusiasts are increasingly hearing - stands at the forefront of this vibrant genre.
Born Zothiwani Jnr II Buthelezi in KwaNongoma, a culturally rich small town in KwaZulu-Natal, Stone has forged a unique path in the competitive landscape of music.
“Growing up in this environment, I was exposed to rich storytelling, music, and the resilience of my people, all of which played a significant role in shaping my identity - both as an artist and as an individual.
I attended high school at Masibhekane High School, where my love for hip hop and creative expression began to take form. After high school, I made the bold move to Durban to chase my dreams, facing the harsh realities of the industry. Without financial backing, I hustled in the streets, working as a barman to fund my record label,” he said.

In an industry where the barriers for independent artists can feel impossible, Stone is displaying incredible resilience, working tirelessly to secure airplay and refine his artistic identity.
His latest single, “Heli Khopta”, is poised for release on Friday March 7, following the successful launch of his previous track, “Isgubhu sa Mandoza”, on February 21. Both tracks embody his unyielding commitment to consistency and quality in his craft.
Stone’s collaboration with the esteemed producer Dust Beatz, known for his work with SA heavyweights such as Zakwe, Beast, Loki, Tony Dayimane and Okmalumkoolkat, further enhances his sound and production quality. Together, they are not just creating music; they are crafting movements that resonate with fans both locally and beyond.
The anticipation surrounding “Heli Khopta" is real, especially since the official music video has already been filmed and is awaiting its exclusive television premiere. This strategic rollout speaks volumes about Stone and his record label, YOT Society Media Records (YSMR), showcasing their understanding of the modern music landscape.
With his powerful voice and relatable lyrics, Stone seeks to inspire a new wave of listeners, promoting messages of ambition and overcoming adversity.
His journey into music began at the tender age of 13, igniting a passion for hip hop and creative storytelling. After moving to Durban to pursue his dreams, he faced numerous challenges and setbacks, including the closure of Music House KZN, a platform that had provided him with crucial opportunities.
However, rather than succumbing to despair, he founded YSMR and committed every inch of his hustle toward establishing a foothold in the music scene. He has released three collaborative projects - shaping his artistry and showcasing his versatility, ultimately leading to a strategic turn toward releasing high-impact singles.
"It's not just about having a good song; it’s about navigating a system that isn’t always built to uplift independent artists," he acknowledged. Despite the hurdles, Stone remains undeterred, focusing on visibility and engagement.
His single “Wamuhle Jehova” garnered national recognition and radio play on Ukhozi FM, affirming his belief in the importance of consistent releases in today's music landscape.
In terms of musical influences, Stone cites legends such as AKA, Mandoza, Tupac, and Riky Rick as pivotal figures who have shaped his approach to music.
“Their ability to remain authentic while resonating with the streets has encouraged me to embrace my own style - a fusion of hip hop, trap and Afro elements that reflect my unique storytelling and energy,” he said.
One of the most memorable moments in his journey was the night he encountered Riky Rick and AKA while working at one of Durban's five-star restaurants.
“They had arrived for an event, and during his time serving them, I witnessed firsthand the aura of true greatness. What struck me the most was Riky Rick’s generosity and energy. Despite not drinking alcohol that night, he bought two full rounds of tequila shots for everyone in the restaurant before leaving the scene. That moment deeply resonated with me. It wasn’t just about wealth or fame - it was about the power to bring joy to people. I saw how music enabled one person to uplift and celebrate others, creating an unforgettable experience for everyone around. That night solidified my belief that music is more than just a career; it’s a movement, a way to impact lives.” said Stone.
He said the creation of “Heli Khopta” encapsulated the energy and excitement of the studio, as Dust Beatz worked closely with him to compose an infectious track that speaks to the perseverance inherent in the human spirit.
"In this new era, all you need is good music to make it," he said.
“With the song, I aim to inspire a mindset of resilience, confidence and ambition. The song represents speed, agility and staying ahead - moving like a helicopter above all obstacles. Beyond just energy, the track expresses the importance of believing in yourself and the people around you. It’s about trusting your journey, embracing your growth, and recognising that in this game, you only get better with every step you take. Another key message is to cherish your opposition. Every challenge, every doubter, and every hurdle is just fuel to keep elevating. Greatness isn’t handed out - it’s earned,” said Stone.
Looking ahead, fans can anticipate more from Stone. With plans for future projects and strategic releases, he is not just aiming for the charts - he's working towards redefining what it means to succeed in South African hip hop. "YSMR until the death of me," he said.
