Tashreeq De Villiers, more commonly known as ‘Ricky Vannie Frontline’ is the new Moppie King.
“It doesn’t do anything to me as a person, it’s just a trophy and I’m more concerned about giving the people a thrilling entertainment experience,” he said about his latest achievement.
The name “Ricky” is nothing new when it comes to minstrel game and when he announced his appearance for Baruch Entertainers this year, people were already sitting on the edge of their seats.
Unlike other performers, Ricky had little time to prepare as he already set his sights on missing the competition this year as he was involved with another project.
“I was playing JOLTYD at the Baxter theatre for the whole festive, 30 shows back to back, so I was not going to play klops at all. Then Tolla (Moppie Coach) phones and says I need you , one week before the time. I literally had six hours rehearsal for Moppie, three hours with Tolla for vocals and lyrics,” he explained.
“That’s it. Next day perform. Next week first prize.”
Ironically, the last time he had won this same prize was back in 2021 for Baruch Entertainers as well.
“For me, it’s this item that got me recognised and moved me into a theatre space, so it will always be dear to me. Comic song changed my life. So if I get a chance to do it I’ll do it,” he chuckled and added: “However, the money has to be right too,” he said cracking a smile.
He has more than 12 major first prize trophies for comic song in klopse and Malay choir scenes.
Baruch Entertainers said in a statement: “This is a cultural sport and there will always be one winner, however all of us are winners at the same time. Thank you to every individual, coach, choir, band groups and members for the value you have added in this our comeback season.”
