The Cape Town Steelband Festival will take place today, Thursday April 19, at the Baxter concert hall, from 7.30pm.
The festival is a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and the Steelband Project. There are currently 11 steelbands being taught by the Steelband Project on a weekly basis, with an average size of 16 members.
Performing at the festival will be Herzlia and Camps Bay Primary, Muizenberg Junior School, Wynberg Boys’ High School, Graeme College from Grahamstown, and Theodor Herzl Steelband (The Pantastix) from PE. The highlight of the evening being a mass performance by all steelband players.
Tickets cost R120 for adults and R70 for seniors, pupils and students.
Following the steelband festival will be the Cape Town Marimba Festival on Saturday April 21 at the Baxter concert hall, from 7.30pm.
This festival is a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and Woodworx Marimbas, a company that provides marimba teachers to schools.
Performing at the festival will be Edgemead Primary, Herschel, Bishops Ensemble, Parklands College, Reddam College, Groote Schuur High, DSK, Ned Doman High, Mountview, Mountview drama group, Woodworx Marimba Band, Rustenburg Girls’ High Senior, amaWolseley, Music Works, Edgemead High, Pinelands High, and St Joseph’s Marist College, with a special mass marimba band finale including junior and senior bands from, Bishops, Rustenburg Girls’ High, Herschel Girls’ High, Manenberg High, Edgemead High and St Joseph’s Marist College.
