Style Diary: Glamour interviews content creator, Landa Willie about her journey, discovering her personal fashion aesthetic

Glamour's Fashion Director Tania Durand interviewed three style cultivators to discuss their journeys to discovering their own aesthetic – not easy, with new trends every day. But an old adage says that when you look good, you feel good; it’s less about the clothes, and more about how you carry yourself and how you feel when you wear your favourites.

GLAMOUR: Can you describe your personal style?

Landa Willie: I’d like to think that at the core, my style is uncomplicated, comfortable street. That’s always my foundation; from there, I just build and play. Even when I’m switching up, the base will always be street. It’s my go-to vibe, no matter how much I experiment.

G: Can you share your journey in cultivating your personal aesthetic?

LW: It’s been a bit trial and error, honestly– buying a whole bunch of nonsense, but also getting my hands on some really cool and timeless pieces. My style is deeply tied to my personality and even my queer identity. I have a feminine exterior, but a very masculine interior; I like pieces that reflect that. For a long time I didn’t think too much about my aesthetic, I just went for what was pretty or trendy.Now I’m focused on finding pieces that truly feel like me – have meaning, reflect my personality, even connect with my younger self. I find that on days when I don’t quite feel like myself, I can at least put myself on’ and get on with it.I’m rebuilding my wardrobe after clearing out most of my clothes, and I’m excited to redefine – or rather, elevate – my style in a way that feels more intentional, while still leaving space for growth.

G: What are the key components to create your style?

LW: For me, it’s all about layering, colour, texture and dimension. I’m drawn to pieces that reveal more the closer you look – those with details that go beyond what meets the eye. I love duality. I once bought this stunning bag in the most beautiful colour. At first, it seemed simple; but inside, it had the most beautiful details – little touches you’d only notice if you looked closely.I love that kind of subtle boldness –understated, yet quietly powerful.At the same time, I’m naturally such a maximalist. I love piling on jewellery, rocking really strong and bold prints, and wearing pieces that are loud. Those are often the items I’m drawn to instantly.

G: What trend do you dislike the most, and what’s a trend that you love?

LW: The gworls creating their own aesthetic is my fave trend! It’s refreshing and cool. On the fl ip side, I’m not a fan of the mesh maxi dress trend. Sorry!

G: What item are you looking forward to adding to your wardrobe?

LW: I’m looking forward to adding more pieces from TOGA ARCHIVES, like their accessories – those bags and earrings have a special place in my heart. Also, Miista shoes, especially their loafers, every single Fikile Sokhulu piece, and definitely the Maison Margiela Tabi boot. Plus, I’m obsessed with Adidas, and I’m on the hunt for rare, vintage pieces from resellers.

G: What advice do you have for others embarking on their journey of self-discovery of their personal style?

LW: Have fun with it. Don’t be afraid togo deep; it’s such a powerful way to learn about yourself. Find your base, that 'feeling’, and build from there. It’ll help you on the days you don’t feel inspired. Finally, don’t let yourself get stuck or too comfortable within the confines of societal norms – especially gender norms – when it comes to clothes.Honestly, this is all about you – your opinion is the only one that truly matters.

G: How has understanding your personal aesthetic affected how you show up?

LW: It’s been incredibly instrumental and empowering. It’s more than just the clothes I wear; it’s a reflection of my views, my energy, how I want to engage with others, with the world.It’s an expression of my individuality and creativity in ways that feel true to myself, making me feel not only sure and confident in who I am, but resolute and grounded in the person I’ve become and am becoming.
