DURBAN - A 55-year-old woman from Madadeni, Newcastle was arrested by the South African Police Services following the disappearance of her mother.
Through a source, The Mercury was alerted about the arrest of the woman following the shocking discovery of her mother’s remains in a locked house.
KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident.
According to Gwala, on September 22, 2021 at 8:15pm, police received a complaint from members of the community in Madadeni about a 72-year-old woman who had not been seen in the area for a while.
Gwala said the SAPS responded to the community complaint and went looking for the missing woman who had been staying with her daughter.
On arrival at the residence the police found the missing woman’s 55-year-old daughter who had locked herself inside the house.
“The police managed to gain entry and questioned the daughter about her mother. She informed the police that her mother had been sick and that she had died seven months ago.
“She decided to keep the body in her room. An inquest docket was opened at Madadeni for investigation,” said Gwala.
During the search of the house, they recovered two firearms which were kept in a safe, said Gwala.
“The woman claimed the firearms belonged to her late mother and brother. She was charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and appeared in Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on September 27, 2021.”
Gwala added that the case was remanded for the woman to be sent for mental observation.
