E-hailing driver held after killing hijacker, say cops

An e-hailing driver has been arrested after he fatally stabbed a man, who tried to hijack him, say police.

The dead man was found with stab wounds to his chest in Acton Road, Rosebank, at 5am on Thursday February 11.

Rondebosch police spokesman Warrant Officer Lyndom Sisam said the man, believed to be between 25 and 30, had a wallet in his pocket that held a bank card belonging to a woman.

Police arrested the 28-year-old e-hailing driver on Tuesday afternoon. He is accused of killing the hijacker and then fleeing the scene.

The driver had been called to Acton Road, said Warrant Officer Sisam. “When the driver reached his destination, three carjackers were waiting for him.”

Two hijackers had tried to pull the driver out of the car while the third had waited in another vehicle, he said.

“The e-hailing driver managed to stab the carjacker in the jugular, who dropped to the ground. Then the other carjacker who was armed with a firearm ran away to the other vehicle, which fled the scene.”

Police traced the driver using surveillance cameras and arrested him at his home.

It was up to the court to decide what the driver would be charged with as he had not come forward after the killing, Warrant Officer Sisam said.

Police are still searching for the two other hijackers.
