Holy Cross Primary School counts its blessings

Holy Cross Primary School started the academic year on a positive note as it now has use of a building wrecked in a fire two years ago.

The fire destroyed three classrooms and damaged the computer lab and kitchen on Thursday February 7 2019.

Repairs started in October of that year and were completed in December last year.

The building has two Grade 1 classrooms, two Grade 2 classrooms, three storerooms and a computer room.

Holy Cross Primary School principal Nomthandazo Zweni said they felt blessed to have the repairs completed.

“The children are excited, especially the Grade 1s who started last year who are moving into this new building, and the teachers are more excited because they can get a refreshed classroom with new resources.”

With more space, the school would also feel less cramped, she said.

The cost of the repairs was covered by insurance as well help from donors, and Ms Zweni thanked all those who supported the school in the aftermath of the fire.

The school received laptops, fridges, washing machines, cutlery, food and money as well as support from the Holy Cross Sisters. The Otto Foundation and The Bookery helped the school complete the Liyabona Library, which opened in January last year.

“We are grateful for all the support given by partners, volunteers and the community,” Ms Zweni said. “It really helped us in our time of need. And even last year, during the coronavirus pandemic, all these items provided to the school were helpful.”

Holy Cross teacher Carlene Leukes said her Grade 1 pupils now had a pleasant new place to learn.

“We have air conditioners, which will ensure that the children won’t be hot and sleepy, and we have an interactive whiteboard and overhead projector.”

Ms Zweni added: “There is a feeling that teachers and pupils want to be in that room, and I thank God for the new building.”
