SKRIK: Cynthia Baartman
An alleged drunk taxi driver made a stop on someone's fence in Wesbank.
Witnesses say the ou was dik gesuip and missed the road, destroying Cynthia Baartman’s wall around 5pm on Sunday.
The 52-year-old woman says she was sitting in her front yard when she saw her panicked teenage daughter running into the yard.
Seconds later the taxi crashed into her wall on Kasba Street.
“If my daughter didn’t think fast she would have been killed by the taxi.
“She was standing by the gate when the speeding taxi turned the corner,” explains Cynthia.
“I saw her running into the yard and before I could ask anything I heard the loud bang and my wall was on the ground.”
The Wesbank mom states when she approached the taxi driver he reeked of alcohol.
“He was also staggering and then I knew the reason for driving into my wall,” she adds.
“The man told me he was distracted by a person who was walking in the middle of the road and he had no choice but to swerve, and then his brakes stopped working.”
She says she has spoken to the driver and they have made arrangements that he will pay for a new wall.
“His wife came and we spoke about how they will pay for the damages.
“The taxi owner was at my house to see how he can assist and they asked me not to call the police.
“At that moment I already called the police, but they didn’t come until later in the evening. At that time we had plans in place so I didn’t think it was necessary to lay a charge,” Cynthia says.
The taxi driver was not available for comment.
