Marciel Hopkins
Marciel Hopkins, 28, of Harfied Village, will be appearing in her first film, Klein Karoo 2, released this week on DStv Box Office.
The sequel to 2013’s Klein Karoo tells the story of 38-year-old documentary director Frans, played by Tim Theron, who is forced to take a step back and re-evaluate his life after he was unexpectedly left in front of the altar for the second time. Frans meets Chloë, played by Hopkins, who is a farmer repairing his fence.
Hopkins says Chloë is determined to make a success of the farm business she inherited from her grandfather. “She struggles financially, due to people stealing her sheep on a regular basis, though she is determined to find a solution for the problem.”
Hopkins says she was drawn to the character of Chloë - a strong, independent and determined female character in a man's world.
Hopkins completed her BA in drama at Stellenbosch University in 2014. She appeared in student theatre productions and had a modelling career for five years before landing a presenter’s gig in the TV show, Boer Soek 'n Vrou, last year.
Hopkins says she feels honoured to have landed a role in Klein Karoo 2. “I was contacted by the producers to audition for the part, and I grabbed the opportunity with both hands.”
Shooting for Klein Karoo 2 started last September outside Oudtshoorn, and actors and crew were ever mindful of Covid-19 regulations, says Hopkins.
“Temperatures were taken every morning, and the crew wore masks at all times. The actors tried to social distance as far as we could. Most scenes were luckily shot outside.”
Klein Karoo 2 director Liezl Spies says Hopkins brought a vibrant energy to her first lead role. “She is a beautiful, natural talent, and her delivery was spot on.”
The film’s cast also includes Leandie du Randt as Jackie, Sisanda Henna as Bongi and Nicole Fortuin as Tarryn, to name a few.
