Tree by Gail Catlin will be auctioned to raise money for the Friends of the Arderne Gardens.
A painting by a Cape Town artist will be auctioned off to raise money for the Friends of the Arderne Gardens (Fotag).
Gail Caitlin donated Tree, a work in oil and liquid crystal, to the organisation, which helps to conserve the 177-year-old public park and arboretum in Claremont.
The artist visited the Arderne Gardens in June and had been very impressed by the great care and custodianship of the rare trees there, said Fotag secretary Joy Woodward.
“Being herself passionate about trees, she offered to paint and donate a painting in her very unique method of using liquid crystal and oil as a donation for the ongoing work of Fotag,” she said.
The painting, valued between R60 000 and R80 000, will be auctioned by Strauss & Co. at Brickfield Canvas, 35 Brickfield Road, Woodstock on Wednesday September 21, at 3pm. The auction will also be held virtually.
“This donation will assist Fotag with the continued work over the next six months on a complete rehabilitation and re-landscaping of the historic natural Spring Pond, which was essential in the establishment of the arboretum by Ralph Arderne in 1845 and later his son, Henry Arderne,” said Ms Woodward.
She added that Fotag was both thrilled and honoured to have received the donation.
Ms Catlin did not respond to questions by deadline.
The painting can be viewed today and tomorrow, Friday September 16, from 10am to 5pm, and then on Saturday September 17 and Sunday September 18, from 10am to 1pm, at Brickfield Canvas, 35 Brickfield Road, Woodstock.
