Mural encourages pupils to follow their dreams

Standing in front of the new mural, from left, are school teacher Chantal Lazarus; pupils Junior Matinenga, Faith Mafuta, Lisakhanya Mase and Delroy Banda; and school principal Stanton Smith.

A non-profit organisation that promotes urban art has painted a mural at a Salt River primary school to inspire the pupils to follow their dreams.

The mural, which includes bright shapes and colours and a child gazing at clouds among other details, covers a 50-metre wall at Dryden Street Primary School.

A tourism company and Entrepreneurs Organisation, an international non-profit, commissioned Baz-Art to create the mural as part of the Global Leadership Conference, which was held at the Cape Town Convention Centre last month.

“We have aspirations for the school to become a large-scale artwork that provides daily inspiration for its students, incorporating brightness, positivity and storytelling into its very walls,” said Baz-Art project manager Lauren Fletcher.

The non-profit organisation has painted several murals at the school over the past five years.

“We were excited to continue this tradition on a major wall that was due for a fresh coat of paint that runs along one of the main playgrounds of the school,” Ms Fletcher said.

Baz-Art artist Ras Silas Motse, of Langa, designed and executed the mural with the help of Baz-Art team members, more than 140 conference delegates and school staff and pupils.

The school’s principal, Stanton Smith, said, “We are delighted to have the mural done at their school, we hope to have many many more murals which can contribute towards the aesthetic design of Salt River.”

The newly painted mural is opposite the school playground area.
