Groote Schuur Hospital said a special “thank you” to its nurses on Friday May 12, International Nurses Day.

The day, which has been celebrated since 1965 on May 12, marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, who was born on that day in 1820.

Children from a local creche, the Grotties Child Care Centre, sang and danced for the nurses, and there were performances by the hospital’s choir and The Voice finalist Anslin Gysman.

“We want to thank all the nurses for their contribution they make 365 days a year and you all deserve a huge round of applause for what you do,” said the hospital’s head of nursing, Aghmat Mohamed.

Sister Lindel Nell, who works in the hospital’s outpatient department, said: “We are here to give quality nursing care for all our patients.”

And her colleague, Luvuyo Arthur Mqulwana, added, “I met a lot of people in my life and I believe all my patients are guests because when you have someone in your house, you give the best that you can so that they leave with a smile.”

Singer Anslin Gysman entertained the nurses.
