Around 100 residents from the Hanover Street complex in District Six held a community Iftar lon Saturday, March 30.

Iftar is the meal eaten at sunset after a day of fasting by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadaan.

This was the first community Iftar held at the Hanover Street complex, since returning members to District Six moved back there around two years ago. It was attended by the Muslim residents and those from other faiths who were also welcomed.

District Six phase three committee member Jameyah Abrahams says it is a great initiative. “The camaraderie amongst the people is still visible, and the effort that is put into this community is great.”

She says many of the meals were made by the residents and they also received financial donations towards the food.

Ward 77 councillor Francine Higham also joined the community Iftar. “It is wonderful being with the community at the Phase three complex in District Six and good to meet many of them.”

Ms Higham says it is a significant time. “There are many religious holidays during this time, it's halfway through the holy month of Ramadaan, we want to wish residents all the best for the rest of the period.”

Moulana Shamsuzzamaan Cader led the community in prayer during the breaking of the fast. “In District Six we have all cultures, we are trying to revive the spirit again, at the end of the day we are all one creation.”

Bishop Augustine Joemath from the Moravian Church, District Six, was also in attendance and says he has always participated in community Iftars in District Six. “It is a good spirit that is created in this way, people of all religions and cultures have come together and that is very good for the community.”
