Groote Schuur celebrated Sister Berenice Liebenberg in honour of International Nurses Day on May 12. Sister Liebenberg has been at the hospital for 32 years and is an operational nursing manager at the Adolescent Centre of Excellence (ACE). “Growing up I always wanted to be either a teacher or a social worker, but tragedy happened when I unexpectedly lost three family members. I reconsidered my decision, which led me to becoming a nurse,” she says. In the ACE department she deals with adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. “It has a general medical clinic, renal clinic, transgender clinic and psychiatric clinic, and, on average, we deal with 3 300 booked cases per year,” she says. “My passion for nursing is always there because every day I see how positively patients respond to treatment and that gives me the continued motivation to want to serve others.” Picture: Alaric Jacobs
