Twelve-year-old pianist Haotian Mike Yang, from Rondebosch, won a silver medal in the Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition at Stellenbosch University’s Endler Hall on Friday September 20. More than 40 young musicians aged 7 to 14 were judged in three rounds with eight going through to the final round on Friday. Haotian, a Rondebosch Preparatory School pupil, finished second behind pianist Samuel Nel, of Walvis Bay in Namibia. Agnes Huang, from Johannesburg, came third. Haotian received R14 200 in prize money, including the prize for the best performance of a classical work in the second round, performing Allegro from Sonata in F by Jospeh Haydn. Haotian is pictured with Professor Hubert van der Spuy at the competition.
