The Clovelly Monday Seniors Golf Group held its annual South Africa vs Internationals competition and Christmas dinner at Clovelly Golf Club on Monday December 2.
The group’s committee chairman, Gwyn Phillips, said the group consists of local and annual visiting "swallow" golfers of 60 years and older.
They play every Monday throughout the year and at the end of each year, the money raised through the competition fees paid by the members is donated by the organisers to worthy recipients from Fish Hoek, Simon’s Town, Sun Valley, Masiphumelele, Ocean View and surrounding areas.
Mr Phillips said the group supported the many volunteer service organisations in the far south that helped to keep the beaches safe, the wetlands and public spaces clean and rehabilitated, and provide emergency health services to the community.
Support was also given to the Clovelly Junior Golfers to grow the sport of golf within the community, he said.
"In a time when the needs far outweigh the resources available, we try our best to distribute the funds raised on an equitable basis, but with the emphasis on the requirements of underprivileged and disadvantaged children and/or adult institutions," said Mr Phillips.
This year, he said, the group raised and donated more than R70 000 to several recipients and also delivered toys to various orphanages and Victory Kids, a local pre-primary school.
