Cecil Road Primary School in Salt River unveiled a new playground for their Grade R pupils last Thursday, April 24.
The playground includes a slide, swing, jungle gym, hopscotch playing area and benches on an Astro turf.
It was made possible by a R368 000 donation from the South African Muslim Charitable Trust (SAMCT).
Principal Shahid Mathews says for many years their two Grade R classes did not have a developed playground for their pupils. “With the help of the South African Muslim Charitable Trust, the play area has now been transformed into a beautiful play park where the children can play freely and safely,” he says.
“I am grateful for the support of our sponsor and wish to thank our parent community for their trust and support of the school.”
SAMCT trustee, Faried Boltman says a school playground is an ideal setting where pupils can socialise and engage in physical activity.
He says an unsafe playground causes risk for the well-being of the pupils.
“The need for a safe playground at Cecil Road Primary was identified by our organisation. We knew the school did not have the financial resources so we as SAMCT stepped in to assist in installing this new playground,” says Mr Boltman.
“This new safe facility will promote a culture of safety which extends beyond the playground, fostering a secure and nurturing educational environment.”
