Pinelands police gifted the SOS Children’s Village with 14 boxes of fruit and clothing on Thursday June 26.
The SOS Children’s Village in Thornton is a non-profit orphanage that provides a home for 90 children.
Programme director Zama Mbele said this fruit donation would be helpful for their orphanage during winter.
“The children are home, we need a lot of snacks and Vitamin C, so it will go a long way to helping us,” she said.
The SOS Children’s Village also gave the police officers a tour of the property, which includes 22 small homes — 15 of them house the children, while the others are used for the Youth Transformation programme, staff accommodation, an admin block, a salon, and an early childhood development centre.
"Ms Mbele expressed her excitement about the police visiting them.
“We do have our challenges, though it is so nice that we can build a relationship with the police, and it makes it easy for us, so that when we need help, we know who to call,” she said.
Pinelands police station commander Lieutenant Colonel Darleen Koopman said, “The children are our future and if we don’t look after our future, where will we go as a country?"
She said they would like to show the children “their love” by giving the little donations that they do have.
“We are here to show them that we support and care for them and will encourage them to take steps in the right direction,” Lieutenant Koopman said.
