Cannons Creek Grade 12 pupil, Ciaran Steenveld, from Pinelands, won gold in the Computer Applications Olympiad, held at a hotel in Randburg, Gauteng, earlier this month.
The Computer Applications Olympiad competition is for school pupils who take on computer-aided translation (CAT) or International Certification of Digital Literacy as a subject and are computer literate.
In addition to this title, Ciaran received an undisclosed monetary amount for him and his school, as well as a trophy and a smart home security system.
This year’s Olympiad saw participation from over 200 schools, with more than 11,000 pupils entering the first round. Of these, 638 advanced to Round 2, and only 9 exceptional pupils qualified for the final round.
Ciaran said he was honoured to have been part of this competition. “It was the challenge that encouraged me to partake in this competition, but it was also an opportunity to quantify my capabilities in a computer field that is becoming ever more important,” he said.
Cannons Creek CAT teacher, Sharon Ferreira, said the school is really proud of Ciaran’s outstanding performance and this remarkable achievement.
Ciaran plans on studying BSc in Applied Mathematics or a BSc in Data Science or a BBus Science/B Comm in actuarial science when he finishes school.
