Fifteen pupils from grades 4 to 6 at Cannons Creek Independent Primary School in Pinelands represented their school in the speech category of the Cape Town Eisteddfod, held at the Wave Theatre from Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 3.
The Eisteddfod is an annual festival, aiming to promote local arts and culture, inspiring people of all ages to learn, progress, and pursue their talents in the arts.
The event highlighted individual talent through solo poetry recitals and reading performances. “Their preparation and dedication were evident on stage, and they made Cannons Creek incredibly proud,” said Sharon Jellicoe, head of debating at the school.
Top honours went to Lilliana Louw and Scarlett Kooyman, who were both awarded Cum Laude (96% - 100%) for their poetry recitals. In addition, the school celebrated six Gold Awards achieved by Gemma Kalu, Rae Dorasamy, Shura Naidoo, Keira Nivison, Nicole Kritzinger, and Thayer Ramlal.
Seven pupils were also awarded honours: Claire Williams, Olivia Shadwell, Zara Madaramoothoo, Charlotte Duncan, Clarice Broadley, Jonny Baker, and Catherine Tuntuwa.
“I am very impressed with our pupils. Their hard work and enthusiasm paid off - their efforts truly shone,” Ms Jellicoe said.
