The Rotary Club of Wynberg hosted the Kirstenhof Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) on Thursday, September 11, at their Rondebosch clubhouse, shedding light on the vital work being done to support victims of crime and violence in the community.

The Kirstenhof VEP, based at the Kirstenhof Police Station, is a volunteer-run initiative that offers immediate and compassionate support to individuals and families dealing with the trauma of home invasions, assaults, and gender-based violence (GBV). The organisation operates entirely on donations and the commitment of its volunteers.

Presenters Alice Cudworth and Yvonne Reynolds, both volunteers with the VEP, shared stories of how the programme provides a lifeline to victims in moments of crisis. Their work extends beyond emergency response, offering victims a safe space, emotional support, and practical assistance at a time when it is most needed.

Following the presentation, Wynberg Rotary members took action in the spirit of service.

Together, they assembled 50 care packages to be distributed by the VEP to those affected by crime. Each pack included essential hygiene and comfort items like soap, a facecloth, a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, sanitary towels, and a muesli bar.

Recognising the sensitive realities of some crimes, the club also donated underwear in a range of sizes, from toddler through to adult, to ensure victims are treated with dignity.

Community services director of the Rotary Club of Wynberg, Stacy Edwards said this initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between community organisations and volunteer groups.

“As crime continues to leave deep scars on families and communities, the combined efforts of programmes like the Kirstenhof VEP and civic organisations like Rotary Wynberg provide both practical relief and a message of solidarity,” she said.
