Claremont Library and the Cape Mental Health (CMH) non-profit have partnered to create mental health awareness for library patrons on Wednesday, September 17.
Claremont Library provided a table for the Observatory-based CMH to place important booklets and pamphlets they could share with library patrons, while the library itself donated books for the table that shared important mental health information.
Librarian Phindiwe Gana said through their partnership with CMH, Claremont Library aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for their patrons.
“We offer access to resources and materials on mental health, including books, online databases, and programs. Our quiet spaces and reading areas provide a calming atmosphere for those who need a break from the stresses of everyday life,” she said.
Ms Gana said their librarians are trained to offer support and referrals to local mental health services, and they are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming community. “We believe that libraries can play a vital role in supporting mental health, and we're excited to work together with Cape Mental Health to make a positive impact in our community,” she said.
CMH Social worker, Leonora Solomon-Jantjies said they promote their mental health services, where they visit libraries, hospitals and public spaces. “We are nearing mental health and awareness month next month, so we are always trying to put the word out and raise much-needed awareness around mental health,” she said.
