Livingstone High School received a double boost as they unveiled their new science lab and upgraded IT lab last Tuesday, October 29.
Livingstone High School principal, Raliyah Ganie, said the new computer lab was made possible by the school's alumni, particularly the Class of 1980.
The renovation was carried out in partnership with an IT company that is owned by one of the school’s alumni.
Ms Ganie said the IT lab, which needed significant upgrades, has been completely transformed into a modern, fully equipped learning space. “The project included new computers, updated software, and all the essential accessories to ensure our pupils can engage with technology at the highest standard,” she said. This lab also has tables and workstations redesigned and refurbished, creating a sleek and functional environment for teaching and learning.
“This initiative stands as a powerful example of the enduring bond between Livingstone High School and its alumni, a testament to how former students continue to invest in the growth and success of future generations,” she said.
The Claremont-based high school also unveiled its new science lab, which was made possible by a joint partnership between the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), Garden Cities Archway Foundation, and Advancing Knowledge non-profit.
Advancing Knowledge Director Professor Shaheed Hartley said the new science lab will provide a creative space for the teachers and pupils to experience new things in a meaningful way.
Professor Hartley said his organisation provided the equipment and the teacher training for the lab. “Once we train the teachers, they will teach the pupils how to use the resources effectively,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer at the Garden Cities Archways Foundation, John Matthews, said they discuss with Advancing Knowledge which science labs to work on. “Our organisation facilitates the construction of the science lab while Advancing Knowledge provides the laboratory equipment, and together we provide a holistic approach to science and maths,” he said.
