Single mother Majdah Jattiem from Woodstock is hosting a fundraising karaoke on Friday, December 19, to help cover the costs of her daughter’s matric ball next year.
Her daughter, Ragheel Lawrence, has just completed Grade 11 at Rhodes High School in Mowbray. The school has asked all Grade 11 pupils entering matric to raise R4 000 by the end of this year to contribute towards their matric expenses.
According to a document shared by the school, the R4 000 will go towards a matric camp at the start of the year, a valedictory breakfast towards the end of next year, matric ball tickets, a matric blazer, and a matric badge.
Ms Jattiem, a personal assistant at an audit firm, is the sole provider for her household and mother to three other children.
“It is hard to raise these funds as I do not have the support of my ex-husband, and I am the only one working,” she said.
With the help of her neighbour, Hadia Isaacs, Ms Jattiem is organising a fundraising karaoke on Friday, December 19, at the Shelley Road Hall in Salt River, starting at 8pm. DJ Saan will provide the entertainment.
“My neighbour came up with this idea, and we managed to find a hall at a decent price and a DJ,” she said.
Tickets are R100 per person, which includes a meal. Ms Jattiem said they are hoping for at least 100 people to come, but would be glad if more came.
Ms Jattiem said her daughter is hardworking and enjoys spending time with her friends. She also likes reading, swimming, and hiking.
Ragheel said it is important for her to attend her matric ball next year.
“I want to go and enjoy it. I also want to make my mother proud, and when I am older, I can share those memories with my family,” she said.
