The newly formed Destiny Achieve Foundation (DAF) non-profit is looking to mentor and inspire a new set of high school pupils at the start of the new academic year.
DAF was founded and created by University of Cape Town (UCT) student, Mathabatha Malete from Observatory, who started the organisation over a year ago. “I founded DAF because I strongly believe that every student deserves access to mentorship, guidance, and opportunities to grow academically and personally, regardless of their background,” he said.
Mr Malete is a second-year UCT student, majoring in a dual degree in Information Systems and Finance.
He has also taken up a leadership role at UCT, as the secretary general at Carinus Residence, and also served as an induction leader in the commerce faculty.
Mr Malete said he started the organisation as he saw a gap in support for pupils facing academic and leadership challenges. “I wanted to create a platform that equips young people with the tools, confidence, and networks to achieve their fullest potential,” he said.
Mr Malete said many pupils of less privileged schools, such as those in informal settlements, are not exposed to the same opportunities. “I, too, am a product of mentorship and guidance,” he said.
DAF works in various schools in areas like Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and Langa. “We work with high schools, tailoring our programmes to suit the age group and development needs of the students,” he said.
They run free leadership workshops, mentorship sessions, and partnership meetings either at the UCT campus, their partner schools, or community centres, depending on the programme.
Mr Malete said his wish for the new year is to reach more pupils across Cape Town and the province. They would like to strengthen mentorship programs and launch new initiatives focused on leadership, career readiness, mentorship and academic excellence. “We want every young person we work with to feel empowered, supported, and equipped to flourish in their studies and personal development,” he said.
Anyone who would like to get involved with DAF can reach them through social media platforms or contact them directly via WhatsApp at 073 377 6774.
