Thornton resident Yethu Kibi will be part of the all-South African cast bringing the debut production of Pretty Woman: The Musical to local audiences next month.
The stage production is set to open at Artscape Theatre on Wednesday, March 18, before moving to Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg from Friday, April 24.
Based on the much-loved 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, the musical brings the romantic comedy to life on stage with a blend of humour, romance, and nostalgia.
The production features music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning composer Bryan Adams, alongside long-time collaborator Jim Vallance, and includes the iconic Roy Orbison hit Oh, Pretty Woman.
The story follows unlikely soulmates Vivian and Edward, whose chance encounter leads to an unexpected journey of love and self-discovery.
Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management said the company was excited to bring the production to local audiences. “This timeless story has captured the hearts of audiences around the world, and soon local theatre-goers will experience the unforgettable songs, dazzling performances, and all the romance and humour that made the film a classic,” she said.
Ms Kibi, who graduated from the Waterfront Theatre School, formed part of several productions, including the South African premiere of Heathers, as well as productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Pippin, and Oklahoma!
In addition to her theatrical training, her biography states that she holds an Associate of Trinity College London (ATCL) qualification from Trinity College London.
Speaking about the production, she said: “To be allowed to bring the South African premiere to life is one I have bragged about to every single person who will listen. Being a young performer, I don’t have too many expectations, but I’m ready to dive in. I do, however, look forward to the ensemble work. Reading the script has shown me how involved we are in world-building, which is always a fun experience.”
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and Showtime, with a 20% block booking discount offered on groups of 20+ on selected shows for specific price categories. The production carries a PG12 rating, and parental guidance is advised due to strong adult themes.
