Newlands artist Shelley Kibel will host her art exhibition, The Light Behind the Trees, at 6 Spin Street Restaurant Art Gallery in the City Bowl next month.
The exhibition explores the theme of transience. Ms Kibel created the body of work while working full-time as a palliative care doctor.
“The subject of death was frequently on my mind, but the work does not reflect this directly. Rather, it is my response to what I was experiencing in my work and in my life,” she said.
The Light Behind the Trees represents a convergence of the arts - visual, music, and embodied expression.
“These are all tools that promote health and aid spiritual growth,” she said.
Ms Kibel, who retired from her career in palliative care last year, has been passionate about art for more than 30 years, practising alongside her medical profession.
“Art is the opportunity to play with the unknown, to start with a blank slate and explore what is happening emotionally in my world,” she said.
In this exhibition, she will display works created using charcoal, oil pastel, and chalk pastel on paper.
The exhibition will also feature talks and workshops exploring the connection between creativity, health, and healing.
Some of the event collaborators include Jill Trappler and Gabriella Kaplan, who will conduct an art workshop; Dawn Garisch, who will lead a writing workshop; and flautists Bridget Rennie-Salonen and Cobus du Toit, who will provide musical accompaniment.
The Light Behind the Trees opens on Thursday, March 5, at 5.30pm, and other events that form part of the exhibition from Tuesday, March 10, until Saturday, March 28, may incur costs.
