Claremont library organised a morning of play for preschoolers on Tuesday April 23 to celebrate World Book Day.
Dressed as their favourite book characters, the children from Hazendal’s Salahudien Educare Centre and Crawford’s Smart Steps Academy had completed a five-week reading programme with the library that explored festivals and religious holidays, countries around the world, their own country, community workers and careers.
“We asked the teachers to do a book review with the pupils, so if they are unable to write, then they can draw pictures of what they thought of the books,” said Claremont librarian Nuhaa Portland. “We try to assist children with reading as many books before they start school, so when they start school the foundation has been set.”
Salahudien Educare Centre principal Atiyah Hendricks said: “It is always good to have new people on board to expose our children to fun activities.”
Smart Steps Academy principal Iram Abrahams added: “Our children’s reading knowledge is empowered, which helps the community, and the dress-up day was also a lot of fun for children as it enhances their imagination.”
