The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) invites members of the public to support their annual Casual Day campaign tomorrow, Friday September 6.
The National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) invites the public to support this year’s Casual Day, which will be held tomorrow, Friday September 6.
This year’s theme is “I See You” and is meant to reflect on the NCPD’s shared journey towards greater inclusion, visibility, and empowerment of people with disabilities.
The aim is to raise R30 million in honour of Casual Day’s 30th anniversary. Funds raised will help people with disabilities with assistive devices, provision of housing, skills development, construction of classrooms, transport, food gardens, gender-based violence support services and others.
NCPD national director, Therina Wentzel, said: “The 30th anniversary of Casual Day is an opportunity to reflect, appreciate and focus on shaping a society where inclusivity is not just a concept, but is a lived reality.”
Aan-hou Wen is a registered skills and work centre for adults with disabilities in the Helderberg.
Manager Lee-Andra Koegelenberg said the day is an important one on their calendar.
“I think the funds are much needed, but for us it’s more about inclusion and creating awareness on the day, to reach out to people and encourage them to become involved with us.
“Raising awareness is so important as often times people don’t know how to become involved or to reach out, so for us the day is about inviting and encouraging people to become involved and reach out to us, and other organisations.”
