Help the Rural Child is asking the public to support its mobile bookshop, which will be stationed in Pinelands during the school holidays.
The charity raises funds for the Goedgedacht Trust, which helps children living in poverty in rural areas.
The mobile bookshop will be at the Christ the King church hall, in Woodside Drive, from Monday June 24 to Friday June 28, from 9am to 4pm.
Staff will also be reading stories to children from 10am to 1pm from Tuesday June 25 to Thursday June 27.
The charity’s Mowbray bookshop closed last year after 25 years (“Final chapter for Mowbray charity bookshop,” Southern Suburbs Tatler, July 27, 2023).
“Help the Rural Child charity shops continue to bounce back by bringing our books into the communities to continue our work in growing children’s literacy and ensuring a steady income to support the rural children under the Goedgedacht Trust,” said Nicky Antonie, the charity’s director.
The mobile bookshop started running in 2008, going to schools to sell children’s books to pupils and school libraries.
“It is a real win-win situation in that urban children are given the opportunity to increase their reading skills, and the funds that are generated by these children are given to help the rural children,” said Ms Antonie.
The charity also has an online bookshop. For more information visit ruralchild.org.za or call 021 685 2810.
