Mowbray police are investigating the fatal shooting of a homeless man that took place at the Mowbray bus terminus last Thursday, June 27.
Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says police reported to a crime scene around 5am in Victoria Road at the Mowbray bus terminus.
“Upon arrival at the crime scene, they found the body of a 53-year-old man who sustained a gunshot wound,” he says.
Warrant Officer Swartbooi says medical staff declared the victim deceased on the scene.
Golden Arrow Bus Services(GABS) spokesperson, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer says the external security officer who is employed by their company came to work at around 4.50am to drop off staff at their sales kiosk.
Ms Dyke-Beyer says a homeless person reportedly drew a knife and proceeded to attack the security officer. “It was reported that in act of self-defence, the security officer discharged his firearm, which resulted in the fatal wounding of the attacker,” she says.
Groote Schuur Community Improvement District (GSCID) general manager, Barbara Breedt says the Mowbray bus terminus is becoming their own little war zone. She says it is the second killing there within the past month.
Mowbray police station commander Lieutenant Colonel David Malong confirmed that on Sunday June 2, a 26-year-old woman was stabbed to death at around 1am and no suspects have been arrested.
Ms Breedt says daily operations need to be conducted to curb crime. “It is sad that the area has slumped into a state where normal day to day activities are hampered due to criminal activities that are controlling the area,” she says.
Warrant Officer Swartbooi says Mowbray police are investigating a case of murder and they appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to please call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
