A Grade 7 Micklefield School pupil, Thea van Zyl, 13, is the winner of the South African leg of the International Peace Poster Contest sponsored annually by Lions clubs around the world.
The local competition was sponsored by the Groote Schuur Lions Club.
Thea’s poster was among more than 450 000 entries submitted worldwide for the contest under the theme, “We are all connected.”
The judging was held on Saturday November 6 in Durbanville, and Thea was named the winner on Friday November 19.
“Friendship and coming together as people is important now because Covid-19 has separated us all,” says Thea.
Thea’s poster advanced through to the district and national levels and was the winner in both consecutive judging rounds. Her poster will now advance through to the international level of the competition.
Groote Schuur Lions Club president Sharon Wright says she is impressed by the Micklefield School pupils’ expression and creativity.
“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” she says.
