Rondebosch man walks 125km to honour Hare Krishna guru

Jade Green, a Hare Krishna devotee from Rondebosch, completed a 125km walk across Cape Town on Saturday to spread a message of hope and honour the religion's spiritual teacher.

His walk started at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) centre, in Rondebosch, on Sunday May 2, and in the days that followed he visited Smitswinkel Bay, Cape Point, Kommetjie, Hout Bay and Green Point.

“When we go out into the streets, dancing and singing, we are chanting the names of god and hope this reminds people about their relationship with a higher power. This all goes beyond the suffering going on in this world by giving people a sense of hope,” said Mr Green.

AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, who was born in India in 1896, founded ISKCON in 1966.

Fellow devotee, Subhadra Chivers, who joined Mr Green on the final leg of his walk, said the journey was not only about being religious but about connecting with one's real self.

“Mr Green has inspired us all by his example in faith and determination. Many people joined him along the way and many in the last part on Saturday. Mr Green has inspired us to want to do more of this and more often,” she said.
