The Platteklip Gorge trail and contour path across the front face of Table Mountain will remain closed until further notice.
A fire that broke out on Table Mountain on Sunday has been contained and one arrest has been made in connection with the fire.
According to SA National Parks (SANParks), mountain rangers arrested one person who was charged with arson.
“Visitors were urged to avoid the area and not proceed beyond the upper cable station until further notice,” SANParks spokesperson Lauren Howard-Clayton said, who added that Fire and Rescue Services had managed to contain the blaze by Sunday evening.
Mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith confirmed that one of the City’s firefighters had been airlifted to safety after being injured while fighting the fire.
He added that a joint operation between Law Enforcement and SANParks Mountain Rangers led to the arrest of one person for arson.
“The suspect was transported to the CBD police station for further processing. We can confirm that the fire was contained at 7.30pm on Sunday evening,“ Mr Smith said.
SANparks confirmed that the cable way has been opened, but the Platteklip Hiking Trail remains closed.
“There is still a risk of flare-ups with the prevailing wind from the north east,” a SANparks statement read.
“Importantly, there have been no injuries or damage to property reported other than a firefighter who was airlifted (to safety).”
