A MURDER investigation is under way after police discovered a badly mutilated unidentified body in an open field at the old Thaba Nchu Airport, Free State.
Authorities have launched a manhunt to track down those responsible for the brutal killing.
On the evening of March 3, police responded to a report of a lifeless body found at the location. Upon arrival, officers were directed to the scene, where they discovered the body of an unidentified African male, estimated to be between 18 and 35-years-old lying on the ground.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said that the victim had suffered severe injuries, including a missing right ear, burn marks, and sjambok wounds.
The police confirmed that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification difficult.
One distinguishing feature noted by investigators was a tattoo of praying hands on the victim’s right leg.
“A case of murder has been opened for investigation. At this stage, there are no known witnesses or suspects,” said Kareli.
The police are urging the public to assist in identifying the victim or providing any information that could lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators.
“The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in identifying the victim or apprehending the perpetrators.
“All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,” Kareli said.
