New play at Theatre Arts in Obs

Two actresses will perform a play they created during lockdown, at Observatory’s Theatre Arts next month.

Megan Furniss, of Woodstock, and Louise Westerhout, of Observatory, co-star in Murmurations, which is billed as an exploration of unanswerable questions; a multi-sensory, possibly participatory experience, for the up-to-15 people attending each night.

“We wanted to create a piece of work that was totally different from the old, familiar tradition of theatre and make something that the audience could experience differently too,” says Furniss.

She says she enjoyed working with Westerhout on this two-hander.

“We really get each other; we laugh, get serious, get excited, get passionate, get angry and then get creative.”

Furniss is a UCT drama graduate with more than 30 years experience in performance arts.

She is a playwright, improviser, author, director and storyteller.

“I love all aspects of what I do, differently. In directing, I like coaxing performances out of actors.”

Furniss acted in the Showmax series, Tali’s Wedding, in 2017, and she will appear in the second season, currently filming.

Last year, Furniss played an alien in Vagrant Queen, a sci-fi series shot in Cape Town.

She will be directing the play, From Koe’siestes to Kneidlach – with Kids!, which is written and performed by Chantal Stanfield, at the Baxter this festive season.

Murmurations is part of the Creating Theatre in the Age of Coronavirus series.

It will play from Wednesday December 2 until Saturday December 5, at 8pm.

No two performances of Murmurations are the same.

Tickets cost R100 and can be purchased at https://theatrearts.co.za.

Bookings must be made online in keeping with Covid-19 protocols and no cash sales are available at the door.
