Rahmaniyeh Primary School in District Six unveiled their new library last Thursday, March 6.

The library has been named Rahmah, which means mercy, compassion and kindness in Arabic.

It cost nearly R6 million and it was made possible through collaborative work done by non-profits including the Otto Foundation, Rotary Club of Newlands, Kamvalethu Foundation, Biblionef South Africa, as well as support from family and corporate donors.

The newly-constructed library on the school grounds boasts new books, tables and chairs and outdoor seating and an outdoor learning area for pupils to interact with the environment.

Otto Foundation CEO, Dr Frouwien Bosman says their organisation invests in libraries because to develop a reading culture in a school the pupils must have access to books. “Our libraries form the cornerstone of our broader school campaign to promote reading for enjoyment,” she says.

The Otto Foundation also employs librarians to run the school library and according to Dr Bosman, the library will have a R240 000 annual operating cost.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis attended the opening of the new library. “I am honoured to join the opening of the library, it is a great moment that will encourage the pupils in the joy of reading.”

He thanked the various non-profits and donors for supporting this project.

Rahmaniyeh Primary School principal, Shireen Jaffer, shared a “heartful” thanks to the sponsors and donors for making the library a reality.

“This library represents more than just a physical space, it represents a gateway to knowledge, imagination, and opportunity. It is a place where our learners will discover new worlds, develop a love for reading, and cultivate essential skills for success."

Ms Jaffer thanked the support of the Otto Foundation , the Mayor and sponsors for their unwavering support towards the school. “Your partnership has enabled us to create a truly exceptional learning environment, and we look forward to seeing the impact it will have on our pupil’s lives."
