Dr Leigh Howard raised over R8 000 for Woodside Special Care Centre non-profit when she ran the Two Oceans half marathon on Sunday, April 6.
Dr Howard, 32, from Newlands, who works at Tygerberg hospital, put on her running shoes to complete the gruelling 21.1km distance in over 2h20 minutes.
“It was a good race, it was nice to be surrounded by all the supporters, especially on all the hilly climbs," she says.
Dr Howard has been into running since she was 16. She previously participated in the Two Ocean’s half marathon in 2010, and also did the Gun Run half marathon and the Knysna half marathon.
She has worked at Tygerberg hospital for the past two years and is currently in the orthopedic department. She says she chose to support the Rondebosch East-based Woodside as she identifies with their cause. “Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are often lost in the system and may have nowhere to go and their families perhaps struggle so it made sense for me to support their cause,” she says.
Woodside manager, Melanie Brand says she is excited by the funds raised by Dr Howard and the other runners, who ran the Two Oceans in support of their organisation. “The runners help create more awareness about the organisation,” she says.
