Holy Cross Primary School in District Six unveiled its new digital lab on Tuesday, September 9, aimed at boosting pupils’ literacy levels.
Called the Click Lab, consists of 38 tablets donated by the Click Learning non-profit. In addition, the organisation also provided two facilitators to teach the pupils various educational programs on the tablets, as well as providing training for Holy Cross teachers on these devices and programmes.
Principal Nomthandazo Zweni said the lab will help strengthen classroom learning. “The pupils can take what they learnt in the classroom, and when they work on the tablets in the Click Lab, it allows them at their own pace to see if they understand what they have learnt,” she said.
Grade 3 teacher Melody Kasai said it is encouraging that their pupils get to learn and work with new technology. “We integrate technology with learning, so when pupils are learning through the tablet, they will develop independent thinking, and it will help them in the future when they do other activities,” she said.
This Click Lab is an addition to the computer lab that the school has had for the past few years.
Growth lead of Click Learning, Ntsiki Bangini, said her organisation is an educational technology organisation that supports under-resourced primary schools in the country. “Our goal is to bridge the gap to enable pupils to read by Grade 4,” she said. Ms Bangini said they also use interactive games on the tablets that assist with learning. “Our programmes are gamefied and personalised, and they are self-paced,” she said.
