Cannons Creek Independent High School performed Save Hamlet as its annual dramatic performance at its school hall last Thursday May 22 and Friday May 23.

Save Hamlet is a retelling of the old Shakespearean play with this version done by American playwright, Mark Harvey Levine who took a comedic approach to the original tragedy of Hamlet.

In this version, many of the traditionally male characters are actually women in disguise. These quick-thinking female characters realise there is likely to be a grim ending and decide to intervene to prevent the widespread death and destruction.

Cannons Creek head of drama Judith Herbig directed the pupils. American playwright Mr Levine sent an email to the school wishing them well in staging the play: “I'm very excited you'll be doing this production!  This will be the first non-US production of Save Hamlet. I'm very curious to hear how it all goes! I just wanted to wish you and the cast a hearty "Break a leg" for Save Hamlet."

From left are Peaseblossom played by Grade 8 pupil Leah Kooyman, with Bernadette played by Grade 11 pupil Sophia Stamatiadis, Marcella played by Grade 11 pupil Baily Manko, and Francesca played by Grade 11 pupil Georgie Jellicoe.
